New School Features Daylighting
The new Clackamas High School in the Portland area opened in April of 2002 to high acclaim. Expected to be "LEED® certified" this fall by the US Green Building Council, the innovative 268,000 sq.ft. structure features extensive daylighting design, with lighting energy use nearly 60% below Oregon Energy Code levels.
Working as part of the BOORA Architects team, Interface Engineering providing lighting design, daylighting controls, electrical engineering and building commissioning for this unique high school design. Proving that you can have "champagne on a beer budget," this school was built for a totally conventional budget of $118 per sq.ft.
According to architect Heinz Rudolf, principal of BOORA Architects (www.boora.com), Interface's lighting designers, Robert Dupuy and Scott Micucci, "successfully mixed daylighting with electric lighting." He said, "Their design includes a control system with completely new applications to provide utmost flexibility for controls, measurement and verification."
Now, Interface's team is taking its daylighting expertise to other projects including a new middle school in The Dalles, central Oregon.

Interface Headquarters to Move Downtown
In mid-October, in order to work more closely with many of our clients, Interface Engineering is moving its corporate headquarters from suburban Milwaukie, Oregon to downtown Portland. Omid Nabipoor, president, said, "Our home will be the nearly 100-year-old Mohawk Building. We're going to be able to offer our employee associates and owners three major public transportation options: light rail, bus and street car, as well as walking and bicycling for those who live close in."
Interface's move is part of its campaign to introduce considerations of sustainability into every aspect of our operations. David Pickett, senior VP, said "We've already created substantial sustainable design technical competencies. Now, we're moving to increase that commitment. We are also purchasing two gas-electric hybrid cars with high gas mileage to demonstrate our commitment to fossil fuel lower energy use."

International: Near Completion in Kazakhstan
Interface's engineers are nearing completion of a 90-family village in Kazakhstan near the shores of the Caspian Sea. This project was commissioned by an international oil production consortium. Working with Portland's Yost Grube Hall Architecture (www.ygh.com), Interface's team has been involved in master planning, central plant power and air conditioning, individual homes, food service and a central recreation and meeting area.
Dan Pickett, a founding principal, has led our international
efforts for nearly 30 years. "Over the years I've
learned that the best projects come from creating and
maintaining excellent working and social relationships
with our architect partners and local engineering teams.
There's really no other secret," said Pickett,
who has also worked in Nigeria and Angola.

St. John's Bridge Plan Boosted by IE Fly-By
Now
in its fund-raising stage, the project to improve the
lighting on Portland's venerable St. John's Bridge received
a major boost from Interface's lighting simulation team,
who created a 360-degre "fly by" to show the
new lighting scheme. Interface's Tom Copple and Scott
Micucci teamed to create dramatic "photo-realistic"
images such as the one shown here.
Robert Dupuy, is our award-winning team lead for lighting
design. "I've worked with architects for more than
20 years," says Robert, "and I know that lighting
is both art-based and design-driven. In my lighting
design work, I try to keep in mind the ultimate effect
that the architect and owner are trying to achieve."
