The National Museum of the United States Army received ENR MidAtlantic Best Project 2021 recognition for its technically complex delivery on a challenging greenfield site and its integration of sustainable infrastructure and high‑performance systems. Opened in 2020 after decades of planning, the 185,000‑square‑foot, LEED Silver–certified museum is located on an 84‑acre site at Fort Belvoir, Virginia and required the design and installation of extensive new utilities, road access, and environmental mitigation.
The project team implemented innovative stormwater management strategies, wetland protection measures, and major infrastructure improvements to support a nationally significant cultural institution while minimizing environmental impact. The completed facility comprises five interconnected pavilions housing immersive exhibition galleries, a learning center, theater, and public amenities, supporting an anticipated 500,000–700,000 visitors annually. ENR judges cited the project’s technical rigor, constructability planning, and environmental sensitivity as key factors in its award recognition.
