Interface Engineering provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP), fire alarm, and fire suppression engineering services for this mixed-use affordable housing and church redevelopment on North Beauregard Street in Alexandria, Virginia. The project was developed as two complementary components: an affordable rental housing community owned and operated by Arlington Housing Corporation (AHC), and a new church facility designed in coordination with AHC and owned by the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection.
The eight-story, podium-style multifamily residential building includes 113 affordable dwelling units. Constructed on land donated by the church to support its mission of creating affordable housing, the development features a two-story community room and multipurpose space enclosed by floor-to-ceiling glass walls. The residential building achieved EarthCraft Virginia Gold certification.
The new 5,000-square-foot church was designed to support worship, fellowship, and community programming. The facility includes a 1,400-square-foot worship space (Nave) with ceilings ranging from 20 to 32 feet in height, an adjoining sacristy, a multipurpose Parish Hall with a 16-foot ceiling, a nursery/classroom, a residential-grade kitchen and food storage pantry, offices, restrooms, and supporting storage and mechanical spaces.
Mechanical systems consist of a packaged rooftop unit located within a screened exterior areaway and multiple mini-split systems serving smaller spaces. Energy-efficient LED and fluorescent lighting fixtures were incorporated throughout the facility, while low-flow plumbing fixtures were specified to reduce water consumption and support the project’s sustainability goals.
